Open and click tracking

See whether recipients open your email and click its links. It is chosen per domain and off by default.

In the dashboard, open Domains and tick Track opens and/or Track clicks on a domain. Or use Update a domain. Every email sent from that domain is then tracked.

What you get

  • email.opened and email.clicked webhook events.
  • Opens and clicks on each message’s timeline.
  • Unique opens and clicks in metrics, as a share of delivered email.

We keep the link and the mail app, but never the reader’s IP address.

Things to know first

Do not turn on click tracking for sign-in or password-reset emails. It rewrites every link to go through a tracking address first, which is unnecessary for links that act as secrets and can add a hop that breaks them.
  • Opens are approximate. Opens are counted when an invisible image loads. Some mail apps load images for the reader before they look at the message, which counts as an open. Others block images, which hides real opens. Use opens as a trend, not a fact about one person.
  • Tracking can affect spam filtering. Rewritten links and tracking images are signals some filters weigh. For transactional mail, the safest default is to leave it off.
  • Be clear with your readers if you track them, for example in your privacy policy. Some places require it.
